Project Summary:
Eskom has proposed to introduce smart metering to support new time of use/demand management tariffs for 120,000 suburban customers. The project is seeking to avoid manufacturer lock-ins by requiring interoperability [1]. According to [2], the South African market for smart meters amounted for more than $14.7 million in 2008. By 2014 the replacement and conversion of existing meter technology is expected to grow to $50.5 million.
