South Mississippi Electric Power Association (SMEPA), located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, has been rewarded $30.5 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid for which the efforts started in 2010 The U.S. Department of Energy selected SMEPA as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds will be used to install 240,000 smart meters and smart grid infrastructure across a range of SMEPA's member cooperatives, providing increased communication and monitoring for the grid.
