San Diego Gas and Electric Company, located in San Diego, California, has been awarded $28 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected San Diego Gas and Electric as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Starting from year 2010, the stimulus funds will be used to implement an advanced wireless communications system to provide connection for 1,400,000 smart meters, enable dynamic pricing, and examples of smart equipment that will allow increased monitoring, communication, and control over the electrical system.
