Oncor Energy Delivery, serving electric customers in the Northern Texas area, plans to install more than 3 million smart meters by 2012 [1, 2, 3]. The company has joined hands with Landis+Gyr which provides the utility’s advanced meter system roll out with GridStream solution [3]. It has also selected Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution, Inc and Intergraph to integrate its outage, mobile workforce and distribution management systems [4, 5].
As of June 2010, Oncor has installed 1 million smart meters since the project began in 2008 [6]. The 1 million smart meter was installed in Waco, TX. In this project, the smart meters are designed to read energy use in 15-minute intervals and transmit the information to the utility. Home Area Networks inside homes and businesses are also supported by the smart meters to enable communication with in-home energy monitors or other home energy management devices. With smart meters, Oncor customers can monitor their usage and get cumulative energy costs, and electricity prices ($/kWh) online through Smart Meter Texas™, www.smartmetertexas.com [6].
