Project Summary:

Atmos Energy Corporation, headquartered in Dallas, TX, serves more than 1,500 communities in 12 states from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West [1]. Atmos Energy Corporation serving areas in southern Louisiana, began its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) implementation in 2007, with a pilot project for 75,000 customers [2, 3]. The pilot project used Sensus’ FlexNet technology to communicate meter readings from customer to the utility [2, 3]. The smart meters are fitted with SmartPoint transmitters. Atmos Energy has signed an agreement to expand its AMI solution by adding 55,000 new smart meters to its natural gas distribution system. Five thousands new smart meters will be installed and fifty thousand of current meters will be retrofitted with smart transmitter units.

FlexNet Inc and Sensus companies provide the smart meters; and the installation of these additional FlexNet SmartPoints(TM) is expected to be completed by the end of this year[1]. FlexNet is a RF fixed network utility meter reading system. Increasing the meter reading efficiency, overhead costs reduction, and customer service enhancement are the FlexNet system advantages. FlexNet offers both two-way and one-way fixed-based monitoring for both urban and rural areas [4].
