Marblehead Municipal Light Department, located in Marblehead, Massachusetts, has been awarded $1.3 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Marblehead as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The project which began in 2010 uses the stimulus funds to install 10,000 smart meters and a pilot program to assess the effectiveness of real-time pricing and automated load management.
