Project Summary:

Lake Country Power is a Touchstone Energy® Cooperative serving parts of eight counties in Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Pine and St. Louis. It provides electricity and other energy related services to more than 42,000 members in the rural parts of northern Minnesota. It maintains nearly 8,000 miles of distribution lines within 10,872 square miles of service territory [1].

It was successful in installing the 2-way Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in 2008, by partnering with Cooper Power Systems, for the northern Minnesota region [2, 3]. The AMI system integrates with Lake Country Power’s existing billing and outage management software, which allows the following benefits [4]:
- Reduced intrusion on members. The meters eliminate the need for members to read meters. We can read the meter remotely.
- The opportunity to analyze consumer usage information. We can help members understand power use and outage history.
- Improved billing accuracy.
- Verification of power quality and outage restoration with crews in the field.
