Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division, located in Memphis, Tennessee, has been awarded $5 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds are used to install digital upgrades, including a high-speed data communication and control system, to the electric distribution system, thus improving power quality, reducing maintenance costs, and serving as the backbone for future smart grid enhancements starting in 2010.
