Project Summary:
Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, located in Manassas, Virginia, has been awarded $5 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid who's efforts started in 2010. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds are used to expand substation and distribution automation and control, including adding a new two-way communication infrastructure to the existing fiber optic and microwave communications, thus improving system reliability and reducing peak demand.
