El Paso Electric, located in El Paso, Texas, has received $1 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected El Paso Electric as one of 100 companies to receive stimulus funding as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The proposed smart-grid project plans begin operations in 2010 and are to install distribution automation to increase the monitoring and control of the distribution system and improve power restoration during emergencies.
