Midwest Energy Inc., located in Hays, Kansas has been awarded $712,257 in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Midwest Energy as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds will be used to install new micro-processor based protective relays and communications equipment at Midwest Energy's Knoll Substation to increase transmission system reliability, enhance synchrophasor measurement and concentration, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy. This project began in 2010.
