Southern Company Services, Inc., located in Birmingham, Alabama, has been awarded $165 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid which has been projected to begin in 2010. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Southern Company Services, Inc. as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds will be used to deploy five integrated smart grid techology systems that enhance energy efficiency, cyber security, distribution and transmission line automation, and smart power substations that will reduce energy load and save money for consumers.
