Madison Gas and Electric Company, located in Madison, Wisconsin, has been awarded $5.5 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Madison Gas and Electric as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds will be used for the project which started in 2010, to install a network of 1,750 smart meters, automate distribution, and install a network of 12 public charging stations and 25 in-home vehicle charging management systems for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
