Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB), located in Knoxville, Tennessee, has been awarded $3.5 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid which is to begin in 2010. The U.S. Department of Energy selected KUB as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds will be used to deploy smart meters to 3,800 customers and install smart grid communications and substation automation to the service territory in and around the University of Tennessee.
