Modesto Irrigation District, located in Modesto, California, has been awarded $1.5 million in funding to develop a smarter energy grid. The U.S. Department of Energy selected Modesto Irrigation District as one of 100 companies to receive federal stimulus funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The stimulus funds will be used to install 4,000 smart meters, enhance the electricity distribution system to help reduce peak demand and overall system losses, and developing improved customer service programs including dynamic pricing, billing system modifications, and education and outreach efforts. This project started in 2010.
