Abstract:

This report summarizes the findings of the primary phase of the project "Wind-to-Battery (W2B)," conducted by Xcel Energy. The purpose of the project was to evaluate the overall efficacy of sodium sulfur battery technology in regards to its ability to facilitate the integration of wind energy onto the grid. Evaluation was done in various modes, such as basic generation storage, economic dispatch, frequency regulation, wind smoothing and wind leveling. Most of the modes had multiple scenarios. The document reports that in most cases, the tests results were encouraging; and for some cases more testing is required.
