Abstract: | This presentation depicts smart metering—an important building block of smart grid—as a machine-to-machine (M2M) application. Smart grid involves a large amount of sensor data, and this is an integral part of an M2M architecture. Various functions are involved here: data collection and aggregation, communication mediation, sensor life cycle management, and event management. Current M2M technical solutions are highly fragmented and usually dedicated to single application; multitude of technical solutions and dispersed standardization activities are resulting in the slow development of the M2M market. To remove technical barriers and ensure interoperable M2M services and networks, standardization can play a vital role. So, EC issued a mandate to build standards for European smart meters.
