Abstract:

The presentation was made at IEEE PES 2011 General Meeting Super Sessions in July, 2011. The presentation asks what keeps water and energy industry leaders up at night: 1) Economic pressure; 2) Public pressure; 3) Political / policy pressure; 4) Sustainability / climate change pressure; 5) Pressure to innovate. It also discusses the changing perceptions of three key stakeholders: 1) Consumers and customers; 2) Policy makers and politicians; 3) Industry owners and leaders. Public policy to enterprise perspective includes: 1) Public policy clearly needs to address energy-water nexus; 2) Long-term viability of both essential energy and water services; 3) Many areas of mutual dependency; 4) Enterprise perspective; 5) Supply planning decisions 6) Operational paradigms.
