Abstract: | The presentation was made at IEEE PES 2011 General Meeting Super Sessions in July, 2011. The presentation describes the challenges facing energy storage as follows: 1) Utilities had no energy storage choice but pump-hydros; 2) It would take almost a decade to decide investing on one; 3) It would take about a decade to build one; 4) Too slow for area regulation and some other ancillary services; 5) Little backup value when T&D lines were severed; 6) Its down time had severe impact on grid operation.
