Bulk System Reliability Assessment and the Smart Grid

Abstract:

Achieving a “smarter” transmission system will depend in part upon system planners having access to assessment tools that are capable of evaluating an evolving portfolio of smart grid technologies. As the number of smart grid implementations continues to grow, reliability assessment models, metrics, and analysis methods will be vital in determining the benefits and impacts of potential system designs. Recognizing the important role of collaborative research and development in advancing these tools, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) hosted two exploratory workshops with the goal of identifying important concerns and issues that require further investigation. A summary of the insights and concerns expressed by the workshop’s utility, regulatory, vendor, and academic participants is provided in this white paper, along with a framework for advancing the development of new models, methods, and metrics.
