Making Sense of The Smart Home: Applications of Smart Grid and Smart Home Technologies for the Home Performance Industry
Kara Saul-Rinaldi, Robin LeBaron and Julie Caracino

Millions of existing homes in the U.S. could be made more energy efficient. New “smart” technologies that provide detailed real-time information on energy use for homeowners and utilities, including smart meters, home energy management (HEM) systems and smart devices, are creating new opportunities to improve U.S. homes through home performance (whole-house) energy efficiency upgrades. Although efforts to incorporate smart technologies into home performance have been ventured in only a handful of jurisdictions to date, the wave of new technology innovation is bringing the future into the present. This paper aims to give an overview of this evolution and to discuss the benefits of future integration.
