Grid Friendly Appliance™ Controller

Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) has developed Grid Friendly Appliance™ (GFA) Controller. The GFA controller senses the power grid condition by monitoring the system frequency and automatically turn off appliances for a few seconds to a few minutes in response to a power grid event. The GFA controller is a two by two-and-a-half inch circuit board that can be installed in a wide range of household appliances and provides demand response capability to the appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, etc.

The Grid Friendly Appliance™ (GFA) Controller allow the appliances to respond to the grid disturbance by shedding the load, therefore providing demand response capability to the household appliances. GFA controllers could help stabilize power grids and prevent power outages by triggering appliances to turn on and off at different times.
