An Advanced substation gateway -- also known as Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) Gateway -- is an advanced computing platform that serves as a single point of access to all intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) in the distribution system. In addition to streamlining the flow of data and automation process, the SMP Gateway serves as protocol converter, data concentrator, terminal server, automation processor, and time synchronizer.
