Grid Friendly Applianceā„¢ Controller

Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) has developed Grid Friendly Applianceā„¢ (GFA) Controller. The GFA controller is a simple computer chip that can be installed in various consumer (household) appliances. The GFA controller senses the grid condition by monitoring the frequency of the system and provides automatic response in the time of disruption. That is, the GFA controller can automatically turn off appliances for a few seconds to a few minutes in response to a power grid event. The GFA controller can be programmed to delay stating of the appliances as well. Therefore, the GFA controller can provide demand response capability to household appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners, water heaters, etc.

The GFA controllers can monitor the grid condition and control the appliances.
