Smart technologies have demonstrated their potential, now demonstrate smart grid vision – Smart Grid Australia
Surrey Hills, Australia --- (METERING.COM) --- August 19, 2013 - Smart technologies have already demonstrated the potential to benefit customers – so the next step is to bring these elements together to demonstrate the full smart grid vision, says Smart Grid Australia in a newly released policy recommendation proposal for government.
With that in mind Smart Grid Australia proposes a more holistic approach to demonstrate the significant social and economic benefits that can be achieved for customers and the nation as a whole. This will require effective integration of new and emerging technology components through standard interfaces, supported by new and compatible business models and regulatory frameworks.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic --- (METERING.COM) --- August 19, 2013 - The Dominican Corporation of State Electrical Companies (Corporacion Dominicana de Empresas Electricas Estatales, CDEEE) expect to install approximately 13,000 prepay meters in the next few months to bring the total to almost 17,000 by year-end.
The three electricity distributors that comprise CDEEE (Electricidad del Norte – EdeNorte, Electricidad del Sur – EdeSur, Electricidad del Este – EdeEste) currently have about 3,700 prepaid customers. The new customers will be added in the National District and in the South region.
Washington, DC, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- August 16, 2013 - The United States’ electric system had installed 1,126 phasor measurement units (PMUs) and 154 phasor data concentrators (PDCs) at the end of March 2013, with more than 80 percent of these resulting from Recovery Act funded projects, according to a new Department of Energy report.
As a result large portions of the country are now covered by these technologies and although there isn’t necessarily 100 percent coverage of the 12 project recipient’s service areas, for most recipients, major portions of their area will be covered.
Vallejo, CA, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- August 16, 2013 - A Grid-Interactive Water Heating Interest Group (GIWH-IG) is to be formed by the Peak Load Management Alliance (PLMA), under the leadership of Gary Connett, director of Demand Side Management and Member Services for Great River Energy, in a move to advance the use of this technology in the market.
Grid-interactive water heating is the emerging consensus term describing high speed, two-way communication between the electric water heating appliance and the electric utility, balancing authority, independent system operator, or aggregation entity. When equipped with a grid-interactive control, a large capacity, electric thermal storage water heater becomes a “battery” for storing electric energy and has the ability to follow locational marginal prices, better integrate renewable energy, and provide fast regulation service.
London, U.K. --- (METERING.COM) --- August 15, 2013 - Britain’s government has announced the names of the preferred bidders to establish the Data and Communications Company (DCC), which will link the 53 million smart electricity and gas meters nationwide with the business systems of the energy suppliers, network operators and energy service companies.
The license for the DCC has been awarded to Capita PLC, a provider of business process management and integrated professional support service solutions. In this role Capita will manage the smart metering service of its users and will contract with, and manage, the data and communications service providers. The estimated value of the license over 12 years is approximately £175 million (with an option for extension for a further 6 years).
Hartford, CT, U.S.A. --- (METERING.COM) --- August 15, 2013 - The state of Connecticut seems to be pioneering microgrids in the United States, with a recent award of $18 million in funding, primarily through the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Microgrid Pilot Program, for nine projects – and an additional prospective $30 million to come.

The Wi-SUN Alliance has completed the development of its certification process for wireless smart utility network devices using IEEE802.15.4g – which means that Wi-SUN PHY certified products assuring seamless interoperable deployment on utility networks will soon be coming onto the market.
During the Alliance's fourth interoperability testing event, held at TUV Rheinland labs in Pleasanton, CA, vendors and test equipment manufacturers executed the full suite of physical layer conformance and interoperability tests soon to be published by the Alliance.
In addition, Alliance members validated the applicability of the Wi-SUN PHY test specifications as the foundation for key areas of utility networks, including field area networks and home area networks. Participants also performed further testing of the Wi-SUN Field Area Network and Wi-SUN ECHONET profiles, both of which incorporate the Wi-SUN PHY and higher level protocols as part of their specifications.
“Completion of the PHY specification, and verification of the PHY test specifications, each marks a major step in establishing the Wi-SUN Alliance certification program,” said Wi-SUN Alliance chair, Phil Beecher. “We are rapidly approaching the time when a 'Wi-SUN certified' logo will provide buyers confidence that the products in question have been formally validated to be interoperable.”
