HP to Collaborate with Swansea University

HP has agreed to a three-year collaboration with Swansea University that will hopefully lead to developing sustainable next-generation cities, communities, and campuses using HP technology and leveraging smart metering, intelligent cities, situational awareness, data analytics, and security threat detection.

Landis+Gyr Looking for Acquisitions

Landis+Gyr has announced plans to acquire companies specializing in power metering and networks. Chief operating officer Richard Mora says, “We aspire to be a company with $4 billion in revenue by 2020 and we will do this through organic growth and acquisitions. If there is a compelling case, they are ready and willing to allow us to make the investments. We are betting that smart grids will develop in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in Asia-Pacific and in South America. The opportunity is huge.”

Ofgem Orders Scottish Power to Develop Public Awareness Plan

A recent Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) analysis found that customers on prepayment meters are charged around £80 a year more ($133) than direct debit customers. The Ofgem eport indicated energy suppliers were able to charge more to sticky customers who did not switch and gave cheaper deals to those who shopped around.

SunEdison to Install Solar Project at California School

SunEdison is partnering with the Rosedale Union School District (RUSD) in Bakersfield, California, to install, monitor, and manage 1.8 MW of solar at the district’s nine schools. The project is expected to save the district approximately $55,000 the first year and more than $2 million in energy costs over the next two decades. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

Honeywell Enters Strategic Agreement with Hebei Province

NIST Updating Smart Grid Roadmap

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking public comments on its NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards, Release 3.0 draft. This is the first significant update in two years of the primary guiding document for creating the next-generation of smart energy grids.
