Project Summary:

The Smart Home Project started on January 1, 2012 with a total budget of over $0.5 M and will be completed in one year. In the frame of the project, an experimental house that will be pioneer in Turkey in terms of several aspects will be set up on campus at Yildiz Technical University. In this sense, first, the smart home has been established in a laboratory environment attaching importance to visual representation. To that end, all electrical devices that are likely to be used in an average house were utilized in the project. After the mentioned processes, the first objective is to determine the most appropriate technology among several alternatives (ZigBee, Wi-Fi or wired) so as to provide communication of the appliances in the house. Furthermore, the energy production and consumption values will be real time monitored in the smart home that will generate its own energy thanks to the renewable energy sources such as wind turbine, solar panels etc.

Finally, the data required by end user such as instant, daily and weekly consumption values of each appliance will be provided online with a user friendly interface. Regarding the mentioned data, the system will lower the energy consumption by controlling the appliances without deteriorating the comfort level. Besides, the optimum operation will be achieved with the help of grid connection and an electric vehicle charging station while determining the differences between the values of production and consumption. By the end of the project, improving of the overall efficiency in the house, the cost effective exploitation of the renewable energy potential and reduction of the CO2 emission are aimed.
