Abstract:

The presentation was made at IEEE PES 2011 General Meeting Super Sessions in July 2011. It discusses advanced (Smarter Grid) Technologies in Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland (PJM). The presenter describes the following: 1) Smart Grid - Two-way Communications and Control; 2) Smart Grid Network; 3) Innovation Activity; 4) Smart Grid Network -Smart Home; 5) Smart@Car-a connection to the grid; 6) Smart Grid and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs); 7) Smart Grid Network –Alternative Generation Resources; 8) Smart Grid Network –Grid Reliability; 9) Proposed Substations for Phasor Measurement Unit Installations; 10) Synchro Phasor Applications; 11) Demand Resource and Energy Efficiency in the Capacity Market-2013/2014; 12) Demand Resource Participation in Capacity Market; 13) Second Generation: PJM Demand Side Response Programs; 14) AC2New Technologies. The energy storage technologies used in PJM are pumped hydro, compressed air, flywheels, stationary battery, mobile batteries, and water heaters.
