Smart Wires Class of Distributed Series Impedance (DSI) Device
Smart Wires Class of Distributed Series Impedance (DSI) Device is a distributed FACTS category as an alternative approach to achieve cost-effective power flow control. A large number of such devices clamped on to the existing power lines can dynamically and statically inject or remove the line impedance for increasing reliability, enhancing controllability and improving asset utilization. The device can operate with or without communication. The Smart Wires DSI device can be manufactured at a low cost when mass produced. The Smart Wires DSI is a module coupled to the line at a transmission or sub-transmission tower, which has the ability to become a useful commodity.
Smart wires class of DSI devices inject or remove the line impedance to control active power flow. It can also be used to monitor line conditions such as thermal rating, vibrations, icing, etc.
